There is nothing worse than waking up to a cold, frigid morning with a non-functioning furnace. Much less not being prepared for it at all. Don’t worry; Eastland Heating & Cooling has got you covered! It’s good to know ahead of time what to do in specific situations before they happen. Backup plans are always a good thing. This blog covers a few troubleshooting tips & tricks if your heat goes out this winter. So when something comes up with your home heating system, you can stay calm and troubleshoot confidently.
Ask yourself these questions to troubleshoot your furnace issues:
1. Have You Checked the Pilot Light?
Perhaps your furnace is powered on but not blowing warm air? If this is the case, we recommend checking the pilot light on your furnace. It is possible it went out without you noticing it. Suppose you find the pilot light has gone out. In that case, there are typically manufacturer instructions on the side of the furnace and how to relight it.
2. Have You Checked the Switch on the Furnace?
Next, let’s check the furnace switch. Maybe the switch somehow got turned to the off position. Generally, the switch is located on the side of the furnace. Perform a quick inspection with this switch and see if your furnace starts running again.
3. Have You Checked the Thermostat?
If the display on your thermostat is not powering on, don’t worry! The fix may be as simple as swapping old batteries for new ones. Unfortunately, batteries are unseen and often forgotten in the process, so keep that in mind if ever your thermostat acts up. Always try replacing the batteries first.
4. Have You Checked the Heat Mode on the Thermostat?
First, make sure your thermostat is on the correct setting. It needs to be set on “heat mode.” Suppose you find that the setting has been changed and you switch it back, give the furnace time to kick back on, and allow ample time for warm air to circulate throughout the house to see if everything is functioning correctly.
5. Have You Tried Using Different Temperatures?
After sifting through each of these steps, and your furnace is still not blowing warm air, it would be good to try running the furnace at different temperatures. It could be that the furnace is only unresponsive to one temperature. If this is the case, you will want to call to make an appointment with a service professional at Eastland Heating & Cooling. But it may help you and your family in the meantime if you can get it running at a different temperature.
6. Have You Checked the Circuit Breaker?
Last, of all, try checking the circuit breaker to see if the furnace switch needs to be flipped back. It may sound crazy, but the solution to getting your furnace up and running again may be as easy as a flip of a switch.
Keep in mind that these tips & tricks are recommended as basic troubleshooting steps to help you pinpoint the cause of the problem. However, if you have gone through each of these steps and your heat is still not working, please don’t delay calling your HVAC family at Eastland Heating & Cooling.
